For shipments of scrap carbide or high speed steel of less than 450 lbs—we recommend that you ship by US Priority Mail, in 40-60 lb increments, using the United States Post Office’s 11 x 8.5 x 5.5 Flat Rate box, that can be picked up from your local post office for free.

US Post Office Priority Mail Boxes

The rate is flat at $9.80 for any weight under 70 lbs, but we strongly suggest keeping it to 55 lbs or less. You should use the smaller, 11 x 8.5 x 5.5 Flat Rate Box to get the $9.80 flat rate. We usually reimburse the $9.80 flat rate for each box shipped, as long as your shipment exceeds 40 lbs.

We also recommend that you purchase insurance, which we do not reimburse. We also recommend Pick and Click

When packing the box, place the scrap carbide or HSS for recycling in “inside” containers like covered coffee cans, paint cans, plywood boxes, or tripled heavy-duty, freezer zip-lock bags wrapped in packing tape (yes, we absolutely mean 3 bags thick).

Think of the inside container as a bowling ball on steroids. Stuff tightly crumpled newspaper between and around the inside container so that it is absolutely as immobile as possible during shipment. Newspaper is cheap, please crumple a lot of it.

The whole idea is to stop the scrap carbide (or HSS) from moving at all.

NEVER USE PACKING PEANUTS OR SHIP LOOSELY PACKED CARBIDE—just thrown in the box, the good old scrap carbide will just break through. We present some don’ts in our Rogues’ Gallery----------->

Scrap carbide and HSS for recycling need to be separated from each other and be clean and free of foreign material.

See the SparkTest for more on HSS.

Any loss during shipment is your responsibility. We mail your check within 24 hours.

We use DOUBLED, industrial strength, 8-mil bags to ship all over the country. Flimsy sandwich zip locks burst wide open. Garbage bags do not work.

Please use TRIPLED heavy-duty freezer bags or doubled 8mil industrial bags as we do.

The 50 lbs of scrap carbide double-bagged and taped, above, is thoroughly padded for shipment in the flat rate box, below.
